Methods & Sources
This portal provides derived climate indicators computed from public satellite and reanalysis datasets. Each dataset page includes its exact source, processing steps, and limitations.
Data Sources
NASA MODIS
Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer
Land Surface Temperature (LST), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) from Terra and Aqua satellites.
CHIRPS
Climate Hazards Infrared Precipitation with Stations
High-resolution gridded precipitation estimates combining satellite imagery with in-situ station data for rainfall and drought monitoring.
ERA5
ECMWF Reanalysis (Optional)
Fifth generation atmospheric reanalysis providing comprehensive climate variables for validation and gap-filling where needed.
Processing Methods
General Workflow
- Download source data from NASA EARTHDATA, CHIRPS, or Copernicus CDS
- Apply quality assurance filters based on provider-recommended QA flags
- Aggregate to administrative boundaries using GAUL 2024 district polygons
- Compute zonal statistics (mean, min, max, pixel count)
- Export to CSV format with standardized column names
Administrative Boundaries
All district-level aggregations use the Global Administrative Unit Layers (GAUL) 2024 edition maintained by FAO. This ensures consistency across all indicators and enables cross-dataset comparisons.
